Dr. Joseph Youngblood II, dean of The John S. Watson School of Public Service, and director of The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy at Thomas Edison State University, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Child Development (FCD).

“We are pleased to have Dr. Youngblood join the Board of the Foundation for Child Development. His commitment to the education of New Jersey’s children, especially during their Prekindergarten-third grade years, will be of great benefit to the children that the Foundation seeks to support,” said Ruby Takanishi, president of the Foundation for Child Development.

Established in 1899, The Foundation for Child Development is a national, private philanthropy dedicated to the principle that all families should have the social and material resources to raise their children to be healthy, educated and productive members of their communities. The Foundation seeks to understand children, particularly the disadvantaged, and to promote their well-being. The Foundation believes that families, schools, nonprofit organizations, businesses and government at all levels share complementary responsibilities in the critical task of raising new generations.

“I am honored by my selection to the Board of FCD and excited to serve an organization with its history, mission and values. I am equally excited to work with the Foundation’s extraordinarily talented and committed group of leaders and board members to promote the well-being and positive development of our children,” said Youngblood, who also serves the University as associate vice president for Public Affairs.

An educator and administrator with a background in law, public policy, research and counseling, Youngblood has worked for Thomas Edison State University for more than five years. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City, Iowa, an M.A. in education administration from the University of Iowa College of Education and a B.S. in political science and English literature from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fla.

Youngblood serves as policy adviser to the New Jersey Urban Mayors’ Association and is a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Francis Medical Center, in Trenton; a member of the Board of the Urban Education Fund, in Philadelphia; and an advisory board member of the New Jersey Childcare Economic Impact Council. He is the author of several articles and reports on education.
