The Thomas Edison State University bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Energy Engineering Technology was recently awarded initial accreditation by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET.
This accreditation status is retroactive to October 2010.
“We are extremely pleased that our Nuclear Energy Engineering Technology program has earned this distinction,” said William J. Seaton, vice president and provost of Thomas Edison State University. “This international accreditation confirms that our program meets the rigorous benchmarks set forth by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET and will benefit adult learners who are interested in advancing in the nuclear energy engineering field.”
The bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Energy Engineering Technology emphasizes the practical application of engineering principles as they relate to nuclear power generation. The program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary to perform in nuclear reactor operations, quality assurance, instrumentation and control technology and related areas.
“The degree program has been popular for more than two decades with the University’s U.S. Navy student population transitioning to civilian positions and adult learners already employed in the field by giving them access to increasing levels of leadership in the nuclear power industry,” said Seaton. The program’s partnerships with the nuclear sector include the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and community colleges throughout the U.S.
According to the organization’s site, ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization founded in 1932 that accredits college and university programs in the disciplines of applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. ABET accredits over 3,100 programs at more than 660 colleges and universities in 24 countries. ABET accreditation, which is voluntary and achieved through a peer review process, provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards established by the profession. ABET is a specialized accrediting agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
